Why All Natural, Organic, Vegan Ingredients with Low Fat and Sugar Content?
Because birds are very sensitive animals!
Everyone knows the story of the canary in the coal mine. It's no accident that they chose birds to serve as warning signals for environmental conditions. The situation is not that different with food. In the wild birds are adapted to and balanced with their environment. They select a diet that is suited to their nutritional and energy needs.
As companions, they don't have that choice. They eat what's available yet have very different nutritional needs. You've probably heard about some wild birds eating their own weight in food every day. But those birds have to fly long distances and continually forage and hunt for their meals. Can you imagine what would happen if your companion bird ate its weight in fat-rich food?
And foods that wild birds may like, aren't necessarily what should go into the dish of a relatively inactive indoor bird. Their nutritional and energy needs are different. Companion birds need variety and the same key nutrients. But foods with high oil and sugar content like corn, sunflower, safflower and peanuts simply don't make sense. Companion birds are not able to burn it off. The result is a surplus of oil in their system which is manifested visibly in unhealthy feathers of poor quality and internally with excess oil carried as fat deposits.
I looked on the market without success for parrot foods that were low fat, organic, and preservative and additive free. I also wanted food that had no unnecessary calories due to high oil content from peanuts, sunflower and safflower seeds. And I wanted to avoid corn with its high sugar content and natural estrogen.
Unable to find parrot food that met my guidelines, I decided to blend my own. I developed Oh Boy at first to rebuild the health of Joey, an ailing adopted cockatiel (she's fine now). Then I started using it to augment my healthy birds' regular diets. My goal was providing a natural alternative to organic pelleted diets without sacrificing any of the high quality nutrients necessary for optimum parrot health.
Oh Boy is a mixture of raw, organic whole grains, legumes and seeds. You can serve it as is or cooked. Try both ways and see what your birds like. You can add your birds' favorite chopped fruits or vegetables to cooked Oh Boy to add extra nutrition, flavor, color and texture. Oh Boy also lets you introduce new fruits and vegetables into a finicky eater's diet.
I hope you will try Oh Boy Parrot Food for your birds and see the difference it makes yourself.
