Cooking Oh Boy Parrot Food

Note: you can serve Oh Boy raw straight from the bag. Some birds prefer it that way! We recommend trying both raw and cooked Oh Boy to find out what your birds like better.

You can cook Oh Boy on the stove or in the microwave.

Microwave Cooking Instructions

In a microwave safe glass container, combine 100g (approximately 2/3 cup), Oh Boy Parrot Food and 3/4 cup water, stir well. Microwave on high, uncovered, for 1 minute then stop to check and stir. Keep cooking for 1 minute periods until the food reaches desired consistency.

Food cooked in the microwave continues cooking after cooking time is finished. Adjust the number of cooking intervals accordingly. Cover and cool to room temperature before serving.

Stovetop Cooking Instructions

We've set up a table with tested proportions for different batch sizes.

Oh BoyWater
100 grams3/4 cup
350 grams2 1/3 cups
500 grams3 3/4 cups
750 grams5 1/2 cups

Apart from different quantities, the method for cooking is the same:

Combine Oh Boy with water in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and cook covered on low heat for about 10 minutes. Keep watch during cooking so mixture does not burn, but always replace the lid. Turn off heat and leave pot covered and on the burner until cooled to room temperature. Once cooled, remove lid and fluff with fork.

Oh Boy Cooking Tips

Experiment with your starting water volume. Some birds like it mooshy while others like it crunchy. For mooshy Oh Boy, add a bit more water and follow the same cooking instructions. For crunchy Oh Boy, add less water and monitor cooking closely so the mix doesn't burn.

We find Oh Boy offers a way to introduce new, healthy additions to a parrot's diet. Add chopped vegetables such as carrot, peas, zucchini, grated beats, carrot greens, cilantro, parsley and others, after cooking.

You can cook and freeze larger batches of Oh Boy, then thaw and serve as you need it. We cook a batch, pack it into ice cube trays, then cover well with Press and Seal. Once frozen, cubes can be transferred to another container or bag for easier storage.

Alwayss store raw Oh Boy in a cool, dry, dark place to maintain freshness. Better still, store securely bagged or sealed raw Oh Boy in the freezer.
